Animas high school has a very unique project. For 3 weeks they set there junior students loos on the community. the requirement for the project is at least a 90-hour internship at a business or organization of there choosing. the internship is an effort to grant the students experience outside of the classroom. It gives us an opportunity to experiment with possible career choices and personally, I made a few crucial discoveries in my internship. learn about the link internship project at ahsinternships.weebly.com
`my Business
I decided to do my internship at the turtle lake refuge. They were experimenting with using oyster mushrooms to cleanse the area around a building that previously held pesticides. I also helped them take care of and harvest microgreens such as sunflower pea and radish. visit turtle lake at http://www.turtlelakerefuge.org/
Spring update
I have reached out to san wan and I am currently waiting for them to get back to me on whether they can take interns at that time. I'm going, to be honest, I am not so sure about san wan anymore, it's not about the business but the last time I talked to the boss he seemed unsure of his ability to take inturns right now. I will start researching other businesses just incase.
Winter update
I have continued with my research and narrowed it down to san wan angler. It seems that my ideas in the internship match up to san wan angler and durangalers. I have been focusing on talking to people about san wan angler and extending my efforts to learn about the business.
fall update
My plans so far are to do an internship revolving around flyfishing. I will reach out to both san wan angler and duranglers. My main goals for the internship are to be an assistant in either the store or on a fishing trip. I have already had a face-to-face meeting with one of the bosses at san wan angler and he stated that he would take inturns and all I need to do is reach out to him.
reflection
I truly enjoyed my internship however I will be not how I expected. For one did it during summer break and over a longer period so I was able to see projects that I was participating in evolve and change. If I had done the recommended 3 weeks I would have missed some of the events I grew the most from. For example, on the farm days, I spent most of my time working in a shed that used to hold pesticides and chemicals and our goal was to restore the shed and make it into a place that Katrina and the other members of turtle lake could teach people. I was amazed at how well included I was in the decision-making for how the project went about. my ideas and points were listened to despite my obvious lack of knowledge. I would love to pursue a career in the same fields as turtle lake and it has pushed me to learn more about what makes up my diet. October 10, 2020
full project
An average week on my internship consisted of 3 workdays, microgreen day, cafe day, and farm day. Each of them had their tasks that I had to complete. Cafe and farm days were less scheduled and I spent most of my time on those days either working in the schoolhouse or preparing lunch. microgreen days were more consistent with me working almost exclusively on harvesting sunflowers. It was a lot of fun and I would suggest working there to anyone.
